A successful curriculum is the key to a child’s accelerated learning and progress, enhancing their valuing of education and encouraging them to become life-long learners. We aim to provide a curriculum that motivates and challenges every pupil to achieve their very best learning. At New North, we are passionate about what our children CAN do, and our curriculum is built around ensuring children become:
- Literate and numerate;
- Ready, responsible and resilient learners;
- Well-rounded and socially responsible.
We follow the National Curriculum at New North and use this to shape our NNA Curriculum which is tailor-made for our children, linking to our local setting and community. We draw on the voice of children, families and staff to ensure we include learning that our community sees as important - for example - writing a bespoke Safer Schools Curriculum, and identifying how the skill of resilience threads through our teaching and learning offer.
As passionate learners ourselves, we want children to share in our love of learning and so use a theme-based approach to bring the skills, knowledge and understanding of the National Curriculum alive in a way that motivates and inspires our children and their young minds.
When you step inside our school you will notice the high standards of our bright displays and well-behaved children focused on their learning.
Values underpin our curriculum with positive human values of respect, responsibility, fairness and integrity being the four key values we focus on developing. This will continue to be established across the school as a part of our commitment to a Values-Based Education.
Our school is also committed to promoting the fundamental British Values and strive to embed these in daily school life, giving our children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.
Passport to London
As well as having much larger than average outdoor areas, we are so lucky to have our capital city right on our doorstep. We are real advocates of learning in as well as beyond the classroom. We love the diversity, richness and sheer opportunity that is right on our doorstep to broaden children’s experiences, and even their horizons.
We have built some fabulous relationships with partners in The City (please see our partners link) who help to strengthen our curriculum offer on top of the wealth of activities we participate in across our local community.
Classes regularly visit places of interest and contribute to local events and issues, and we also break out of The City for quieter country experiences too! Our Year 5 residential trip to a farm in Pembrokeshire is an experience of a lifetime and loved by children who see it as one of the main reasons for moving through to that year group!
A flavour of our Learning in London/beyond the classroom
We host an Annual Art Exhibition at the Town Hall, which has now prompted a project for our most able artists to work with City firms who have commissioned art work from us for their offices.
We are part of the Learning in Harmony Trust and as such children, parents, staff, governors, local schools and partner schools in London and Essex communicate closely and work together.
